    Cool Keel Talk

Today I was under my boat and looking at all my scratches and was looking at all the edges of my hull. I remember some hull talk back in the day around 2001-2002.

Have anyone else done anymore talking about it ?
Seems that there may be some speed in this area.

What has me curious, while I was under my boat today looking at all my scratches and I was using a laser level and noticed how much the keel is in the way of the hull line. Basically, how we know that .010-.030 can drag speeds down from 2-3 mph, well, how much is this keel causing us.

Maybe it is not, I am just curious if it was "out of the way" slightly, such as in out of the water, will our speeds go up ?

    But the question is,
*How thick is it there ?
*Does it have to be filled if we go too deep ?
*Will handling be adversely affected ?
*Will top end speed go up since it will not drag in the water at high speed ?
*How much do we cut off and re-shape ?
*Should we add material behind the keel to shorten the inlet of the tunnel ?

    Just asking…….

It's the same thickness as your hull. So if you go too deep, yes, you will be filling in.

Look at this pic. You can see the keel from the inside of the boat.

hhmmm.....so, if it were shortened by 4-6", the void could be filled with Epoxy Resin.....or whatever method to fix.

Or maybe even angled back at a different angle (flatten the last 4-6" faster) to allow it to pull out of the water quicker to not get in the way when the boat is trying to "lift".

thanks for posting that pic...that helps alot.

Now, I wonder what gains/losses can be had by this

Its gotta be drag of some sort, ya think ?

Dunno. I'm sure it would negatively effect handling, but add to top end speed.

The cool thing about the GPR hull, is how straight it stays at high speed. The keel thing has me spooked.

Reading Philip's post, it makes good sense....I wish I had a hull to experiment this on....

I even thought about grinding just enough to smooth out the point and rounding it more. Or, if enough is ground off, say 6" and it is flat like that flat spot, then use a piece of plexiglass or something to drill a hole and then inject that area with SMC resin until it is full again and when dried, shape it back up and paint.

    dunno......just thinking outloud....

    1) look at Austin's first picture, see where the drive shaft enters the hull - this area is not a smooth flat surface, the hull is indented where the shaft enters.

What about making some kind of insert to fill in this area to make this area smooth like the rest of the tunnel.

    2) we know another forum (Jim M.) member gained approx. 1 mph by removing 6" of the keel at the rear of the ski. The keel effects the flow of water into the grate/tunnel. The rumour is Yamaha made the keel to long to slow the ski down to get it below 65 mph.

Removing the keel is an expensive and risky task - I would be worried about hull integrity issues.

Instead what about adding some material to the keel to make the transition less extreme. The sharp edges where the keel ends now could be causing cavitation. By making these edges less pronounced might remove any cavitation.

You are doing your homework Billy. Like i said,i will test as soon as some of the snow melts. I cant wait.If it doesnt work,im going to pull the drain plugs out and let it sink.

Check these pics out, IF the keel were removed/altered/shaved, where do you stop ?
