If your a rookie the west is not for you. I live close to several resorts here in WV. Snowshoe mtn would definitely be my recommendation around here although it can be a little crowded. Wisp in maryland is also nice it's near deep creek lake.

You'll do fine in UT... Cotton Wood Canyon area has all the resorts w/plenty of green runs. It can get crowded on weekends when the powder is fresh. I made my 2nd ski trip ever to the Park City area and never had any problems. Beautiful country.

When you say rookie do you mean beginner or have you already had lessons?

What you want to be sure is that you go some slopes that have more beginner slopes then expert.
Also pick a place that does regular grooming daily as powder is not for the skier still learning.

Colorado has many good places for your type of skiing.
The further you get away from Denver the less crowded it will be.
