    Thermostat loose?

While tearing down, I noticed the thermo was loose in the plastic housing. I took my finger and moved it around, toward and away from the engine. It, the entire thermostat, wiggles easily. Whats going on?
On a side note, I didn't realize how much oil remains in the engine after "all" is siphoned out. BP ain't got nothin' on me...

I meant the metal thermo within the housing. It's too loose for a clamp on the outside to squeeze it. I'll add it to the "unexpected items to work on" list. Thanks for the reply!

Its suppose to be loose, it floats inside...While underway, coolant pump pressure keeps it in place. When you turn off motor, it drops down to allow any trapped air in the system to find its way to the surface via the large downtube from the head, and out the overflow nipple
