    Charging Problem

So after hurricane Irene the weather sucked royally and i've been wicked busy so i hadn't ridden my gpr in about 3 weeks. The last few rides it seemed like it was cranking a little slower but i didn't think much of it. I go to take it out of the water yesterday and the battery is dead (i wasn't too surprised). So i put my spare battery in, and while it's running the maximum voltage displayed is about 12.7, while before when riding i'd get like 14.2 out of it....

So i guess my charging system is just messed up? Seems kinda strange that an 08 gpr would have a problem like that with only 100 hours, but could it have something to do with my 4* keyway? Any advice?

that sounds like it could make sense since i did take it to the ocean once this year... do these skis have external rectifiers near the cdi box?

yes... voltage regulator... common issues is with the connection/plug

thanks for the pic, i thought i remembered seeing one there, so there's typically corrosion in the plug or a bad connection?

it is just something to look at especially when used in salt water... easily splashed with water when riding aggressively if the seat gasket leaks a bit of water and it may... plus any hokie grounds, poor battery health, or other poor connections and electrical parts will cause it to get hot, this connection has been found to melt and cause a lot more grief...
Ever since I read about it, I`ve included inspecting the connection in my maintenance.
There are the specs for testing the output at harness connections, in the service manual... good luck, hope you find your gremlin...
    Battery is good tho? tested?

simple solution to check, remove plug from the reg, inspect, clean, add dielectric and reinstall...

wow i've been here for years and never stumbled upon that one thanks for the tip. I'll be sure to check that. My battery is only a year old; its sealed and has never given me a problem, but obviously since i have the service manual i'll inspect the whole system.
