Is it common for 91 650 Waverunner fuel pump to go bad?

I just bought a clean 91 650 Waverunner for $100 bucks. Guy says he thinks the fuel pump is bad. Is it common for them to go bad. Arent they like snowmobile pumps where it works off crankcase pressure? I think I might start with cleaning the carb.

    Thanks
    Tyler

Looks like I will just tear apart the carb and clean it and start with that.

    Is the fuel pump rebuildable?

    Thanks

Make sure you have spark. The kill switch contacts could be corroded. Also ohm out the plug boots themselves. Should be around 5000 ohms. They can go bad and cause no/weak spark. If it's been sitting that long the carb will definately need gone through.
