The dipstick will read low or zero if it has not been started in a while. Dont add oil thinking it is empty, you will overfill it.

The VX has a dry sump as opposed to wet sump like in a car. When you check the oil in a car, to get an accurate reading the engine should be cold. In the VX the engine should be warmed up to get an accurate reading, on the dip stick the oil level should be half way between full and empty that's the correct amount of oil. When the engine is cold and you check the dip stick the oil will hardly register on it because engine needs to be warmed up and the oil circulated around the engine so don't be tempted to add more oil when its cold as you will over fill it and as a result the engine will push the unwanted oil into the OEM Air Box where the Air Filter is and could result in the Filter getting fouled, any clearer ))

Is the VX similar to the FZ, if so, that is not a dry sump.

Not sure if there are any similarity's between the two ski's, when you say FZ I presume you mean Yamaha FZR ? The Yamaha VX 110 defiantly has a dry sump.

All 1.8L engines are wet sump! Unlike VX or old FX, they can be checked like a car! So no they are not the same!
