I cracked off the back plate while rebuilding the Mikuni fuel pump on my 97 SLT 780.

Found fluid on the back side of the pump (opposite side of the pulse line) sealed off by the old diaphram. Seems odd, but I'm a newbie to this rebuild. Sould it be there? Any suggestions would be greatly appreaciated. -B

That's not good. The question is how did it get in there?

What is the fluid? (best guess)

Thanks for replying back, now that I know it's a bad thing..I'm guessing its old fuel mixture but it has the consistency of motor oil. I'm new to this sort of rebuild. But, I have a new rebuild kit. I needed to know if I was supposed to reassemble this thing to include some type of sealant (oil) or if this fluid just got there through time/ use/ micro perforation or improper previous rebuild. I’m also guessing this might have something to do with achieving maximum RPM at WOT as maybe the machine is starving for fuel?…

For the life of me I cannot figure out why someone would do something like that? I would believe that would hinder the fuel pump's ability to operate efficiently, and not produce the fuel pressures it should.
