    Burn marks on reeds?

    2001 XLT dropped powervalve middle cylinder. Found what I assume are burn marks on the reeds from number one cylinder. Interestingly, the burns seem to have come from the "outside", between the petal and the curved metal plate, not inside where I would expect.
    The inside of the petal is still smooth. Any idea what would cause this?Click image for larger version.

    Common problem with carb'd 66V engines.... it's raw fuel that ignites on the reeds in the extreme conditions of the engine. Also note the edge burns.... and at least one of your cages are probably slightly damaged too on the rubber seal.

    I would also rebuild those carbs, new carb kit along with new reeds.
