    RIVA Racing HydroDrag Post Release

PWC Speed Freaks Gatherat the RIVA Racing HydroDrag

    Polk City, Florida

    11/7/11

The5th Annual IJSBA RIVA Racing HydroDrag event was held at Lake Grew, in PolkCity, Florida, on November 5th and 6th as the final eventfor the Pro Hydro-X Tour. The eventfeatured the fastest sit-down/runabout racers on the fastest personalwatercraft in the world take on an 1/8th mile track launched from acustom fabricated pontoon, anchored to the gils with a hydraulic watercraft lift. The weather was mostly overcast with temps in the 70’s with some sunshine and minimalrain, which came through during Unlimited Qualifying. Though the feature races for the weekend wasthe HydroDrag, this unique event also boasted a “Giant Slalom” Competition forsix different classes and the Blowsion Speedstyle (Flatwater Freeride),Hooter’s Racer Party, Vendor Alley and the HydroDrag had a complete post racetechnical inspection and fuel test as well as a podium celebration!

TheSlalom competition started the event early on Saturday with the Ski Divisionbreaking the ice…or so to speak! TheMother/Daughter combo of Cathy/Taylor Ness brought their collective ClosedCourse Skills to 2nd and 3rd positions, while JimmyWright, the Veteran from nearby Lakeland took the top spot! Jason Maxon, sponsored by Team Mean, won theSport Slalom over newcomer, Michelle Kalvin. RIVA sponsored Eric Lagopoulis took a win the 800 Class, but was upsetin the Open Runabout Class by Troy “The Slugger” Snyder who won by 3/10thof a second on his Neptune/Deans Team Sea Doo X-Package machine.

Saturdayafternoon the RIVA Racing HydroDrags continued with the Speed Alley Competionfor all of the Classes. There was a 10mph crosswind which made it dicey for these PWC Speed Freaks! The feature Class was the Unlimited Class, which did not disappoint the 1,500 plus spectators on hand. There was a tie for second between LaceyPowerports’ Chris Caputo and Chi Chi Performances’ Walfrido Bourzac, bothcompetitors posting 91mph on both runs. Team Puerto Rico will once again boast “The World’s Fastest Champion”with Julio Rivera only using his first run of a blistering 91 mph!

On to the Drag Racing…TheHydro Two-stroke Class which would be conquered by Sarasota’s Eric Lagopoulisand the Hydro NA Modified was won by Kenneth Hernandez, sponsored by LuisMarine. The most popular Class of theafternoon was the Hydro Limited Class which was topped by the “World’s FastestCouple” Kerry and April Hibdon, sponsored by the JetShop and R&D Racing.

Sunday morning hadovercast skies and temps were in the lower 70’s as the daylight savings timereminded us all that we were racing in the fall! The SuperStock Class wouldtake to the water first and they provided some awesome racing action but whenthe jet spray cleared, it would be two best friends going head to head, ExtremePropulsions’ Stanley Hightower and Kerry Hibdon. Oh did I mention, Stan was on one of Kerry’sboats…apparently Kerry kept the one with a little more juice as he would be Kingof the Superstock Class in 2011! Duringthe break, the crowd was treated to the Blowsion SpeedStyle Jam Session byJason Stoyer, Michael Petro and Johnny Leftly, who performed an array ofvarious Freestyle tricks! This wasfollowed by the feature event of the weekend, the UNLIMITED CLASS! It came down to “Team 305” vs. Team PuertoRico and in this head to head duel, it would feature two racers, both worthy ofthe title, the current Champion, Julio Rivera, racing for Automeca and CarlosDeValle of Miami. DeValle had one lossand came back from the losers bracket to win back to back by a bond rail overRivera giving him the title, “RIVA Racing Hydro Unlimited Class Champion!

This was a fun eventthat had several things going on during the show including a sneak peak at thenew Sea Doo, the South Florida Riders Assn snack bar, and some trick display ofgo-fast parts from Fizzle Products. ProHydro-X Tour Promoter, Mike Young is claiming that there will be a series of‘HydroDrag” events next season. Staytuned for the schedule release at prohydroxtour.com. Special thanks to all of the racers, staff, and spectators and the following sponsors for their support…RIVA Racing, SeaDoo, IJSBA, WaterTop, Extreme Propulsion, Blowsion, HydroTurf, Jet Thrust,Exotic Signs, Pro Rider Magazine, Lacey Powersports, Hooters, X-Scream, ComfortSuites, Metal Roofing & Lumber Supply, Bill Bailey, Fluid Ski & Sportand the Polk County Sports Commission. See you on the water! Mikey

What a fun weekend good racing and pretty nice weather. Thanks to extreme propulsion for all their help and Kerry for letting me ride his boat. Big congratulations to TROY SNYDER MR HOLESHOT he won the stock class and the slalom on a RXTX awesome job. Bo Has him dialed in. Kerry and R&D racing has the Yamaha's running in the Limited and Superstock class. The open guys 2 or 3 of them could break into the 100mph in the 1/8 that is fast watching from the finish line was really awesome. Palm Beach Jesse was even there Lacy power sports represented. Next year we need to create team USA Maybe Team Dean and Kerry and Bo can bring it together???????? Maybe Riva could field an entry???

Thanks for the shoutout Mike. It was a great event. One typo I caught was about Julio Rivera's speed, as it was 97 and not 91. Congrats to Chris from Lacey for fighting through the engine bugs and giving the competition a run for their money. To Stan and Julio -- great job coming off the launchpad as usual. Congrats to the Hydro Unlimited winner, the RXT from Miami. That was one amazing performance. It was great meeting new people and catching up with old friends. I look forward to the next event. Nicely done!
