The STOP CENSORSHIP issue
To Jerry &/or any Mods in the know:
I noticed, this evening the "STOP CENSORSHIP" link that's now showing up in the header.
After clicking on the link and reading some, I'm under the impression that a bill has been introduced in Congress that may very well change the GH Forum (and others like it) that we've all come to know and enjoy. I know GH is not the place for a political stance, but I don't think it counts since we may all be affected - my apologies if I assumed wrongly in making this post.
I was curious if any of you in the GH hierarchy could expand on what this issue is really about and/or how detrimental passage of such a bill could be to our beloved website here.

I personally have never seen the ad you talk about...I think the ad system that is running on the site is funneling items based on what is in your cache...I was on my insurance site just now, and all my ad's rotating on all the pages are for insurance companies....I also just checked my laptop, which is upstairs and is used mostly by my GF, and the ad's are for jewelry ....
I quickly opened GH in another page, and the ads were for industrial supply tools...

Actually, this one is sponsored by a Republican. Do a search for SOPA(Stop Online Piracy Act), & you'll find lots of info about it. It's a well intentioned measure to prevent foreign sites from illegally posting copyrighted intellectual property. Copyright owners have very little recourse against foreign "rogue sites" stealing their content since they are not based in the US. This bill would give them the ability to have those sites "blacklisted" from search engines & shut down their revenue stream from credit cards & advertisers.
The problem is this would give almost anyone the ability to basically shut down a site without having to prove their content had been used without permission, & it gives targeted sites only five days to respond & defend themselves. It's scary stuff for someone like Jerry who runs a legitimate site that could be targeted by anyone at any time without due process. Although censorship is not the goal of the bill, that's exactly what it will end up doing. Let's say I'm a member of the radical Blue Water Network group & don't like the pro jet ski opinions being expressed on GH...one complaint alleging a copyright infringement, & bam, GH is removed from Google. Just another example of gov't screwing things up worse by trying to fix it.
That means the Attorney General would have the power to cut off select websites from search engines like Google. It could also cut off advertisers and payment processors like Visa from the sites. The Attorney General could essentially kill all of a site's traffic and revenue in a matter of days.
