Sudden engine death FX HO 160

    Hi Guys,

I thought I had posted this before but I guess not.
2 months ago I was riding the ski in mild chop. Really bumpy but not flying off the water too high. Just extremely bumpy. All of a sudden as I was riding about 45-50 mph engine died exactly the same way as if you were to hit the stop button! It scared the s hit out of me. It started right back up and it never happened until today about 21 hours later. I was riding in the same condition and it died!

Same exact way, it started right up and no error code. Battery terminals are tight! I did not even get close to pull the safety key or hit the stop button!

I rode it back from the island in a very nasty condition, flying up in the air and get hit hard and it never happened again!

When it died in both cases, display gauges stayed on as it would when you hit the stop button!

There's got to be an electrical issue or a sensor malfunction!

This is driving me nuts! Any help is appreciated!

Could it be a semi bad slant switch? Could it be a bad Stop button or a wire that shorts out once in a great while?

This will be extremely hard to diagnose as it is not persistent! At least not yet but I would like to find out what's causing it!

Look forward to hearing from you!

Both of your ideas are good, thats where I would start. First with the start/stop switch, after a while tarnish will build up inside the switches or maybe your key/lanyard is'nt lifting the kill switch as high as it should anymore and that would cause it to kill the motor sometimes.
A faulty slant switch could do it too.
Also make sure the Remote Security Switch, if you have one, is operating properly.
    Hope this helps.

    Thanks DP.

Have you opened the switch system on these models?
I am wondering if I have to open the steering plastic pieces to allow for the switch hub to move and be opened or not! I hope they show that in shop manual! I don't want to open then switch and springs start flying off lol

you can open it to get it off the steering without issue
but that is as far as i went with mine so have no idea after that
i would be blaming the slant switch first though or a crack in a circuit board

i have not seen it on a yammy
but a mate had a 15f that would would occassionaly die in rough water
it ended up being a crack in the main circuit board
it did get worse over time though

    Kev,

By main circuit board do you mean ECU? That's what's not clear to me.
