96 sl900 loss of power
Ok first some history. I bought this as a rebuild project, the previous owner
sunk it and seized the engine and stored it away. So I pulled it apart replaced pistons, bearings, had cylinders bored,etc,etc........put it back together, started right up. Then took it for a few test runs for about an hour everything was great, top speed 65.2. So yesterday we had excellent weather here in pa. and I was itching to get this thing in the water for some serious riding time. After about 1 1/2 -2 hours of riding it started bogging down,
at first if you feathered it she would go but then nothing, the more gas you give the less it would go and die. It would start up again but as you give it gas it would die. I pulled the plugs -1 & 3 were fine,2 was wet
What should I look for?
Just as an added note,I didn't replace any electrical parts, everything was
sealed and in great condition including stator. The ski only has 24 original
hours on it.

Do a compression check. make sure no mechanical damage was done.
Sounds like a fuel issue, like BD said.

Sounds like a fuel problem. Do a plug chop and get a reading. You are probly running dangerously lean. I would not keep running it that way.

To me, it sounds like you pushed it a little too much, too fast. Did you do a proper piston ring break in before you went WOT? Check the compression first, then look for spark on the wet plug. Remove F/A and see if you can see the gas in the carbs while it's idling. (don't put your face right over carbs for safety)

Check for water in fuel system
How do the piston tops look? Piston wash?
You running pre-mix or standard injection system?

Hey guys I went down the list of some items posted,
Heres what I checked so far:
carbs - ok
fuel system - ? gas is being pumped to all jets
compression - 120-122-120
piston tops - slightly damp
fuel -no water - running premix & injection(for break in)
spark - weak to none
I think I may have found the problem
the wires going to the plugs are corroded at the tips, i cut them back 1/4in and the copper looked fried, may have happened when it was sunk or from sitting for so long. I never checked Hope I didn't F*** up something else. Anyway after i cut them back and cleaned them I'm not getting a spark in 1 & 2 and 3 only sparks once when i cycle the engine.

sounds like your stator .

Yea I was thinking stator too, But just for the hell of it, after I clipped all the plug wires and put them back on, I pushed the start button and the sob started right up & revs Now I'm really confused, Is it ok or do I still have a problem?
