How do I get foam piece out???

I am working on replacing spinning hull inserts for my shoe and ride plate on a 2003 GP800R and have seen lots of good threads on how to do it (and will use the newer style inserts), but I can't figure out how to remove the styrofoam piece that was under the black plastic sound suppressor box. I got the sound suppressor out (and broke 2 of the 3 exhaust outlet bolts in the process), and now I can't figure out for the life of me how to get the last piece of foam out. Any ideas?

you have to turn it just right, and hold your mouth just right and it will come out... but it will never go back in

You just have to keep working it, but it is a huge pain! Keep in mind, it's just used to hold the water box in place. If a little Styrofoam gets shaved off, it won't harm anything.

I think the way I ended up getting it out was twisting it so the part against the starboard side was facing down. Then getting that lip out and rotating it towards the back of the boat as you pull up. Keep trying and good luck!

I was thinking maybe that maybe I can leave it in there and move it from one side to the other, and then just work on one side at a time. I was hoping maybe there was a trick I was missing.

I understand there can be issues with the shoe pulling out through the hull with these older style inserts, although I am not sure if that applies to the 800, too. Do you think I could get by with cleaning the ride plate inserts really well (maybe with a wire wheel) and then adding some 5200 around it and use the existing inserts? I'm not really looking forward to spending a lot of time way back there. I'm thinking I should replace the shoe inserts either way.

But unless I go with a free flow exhaust, don't I need it for the sound suppressor to sit on when I put things back together? Otherwise why is it even there?
