    Good Deal? 2003 Yamaha gp1300r

I know I have checked with you guys before but I still am without a ski and want one really bad. Im looking to spend around $1500 to get a ski and fix it up. I have found one that im pretty interested in and just wanted to check it out with you guys because I do not have money to waste. The ski is a 2003 gp1300r. The guy says he is unsure if it runs or not. I checked it out today and it is in great shape cosmetically but it did not have a battery and had a good amount of oil puddled in the bottom. He is asking $900 for the ski and trailer(both have titles). Im thinking of offering $700. Would that be a good deal for me? Im thinking I could drop a SBT engine in and get myself a good ski at a pretty cheap cost. Here is a link: http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/m...850257855.html

To me, the trailer is worth $450-$550 it appears. If you can pull the motor out, you are probably looking at least one case half or a full casing due to oil in the hull (unless a oil line came off and leaked). You will need another $740 for the crank assembly, $100 in gaskets, $600 for 3 pistons, rings, bearings, $50 for clearing the head, etc. A good ski mechanic would probably charge $300-$350 to rebuild unless you do it yourself. In a nut shell, I would allow $1800-$2000 to get the motor back mint. You will probably have $3000 vested in everything with a fresh motor and the purchase of the ski. I would stick wave eater clips back in also $60. So you have to figure what is right for you. I have an 06 Gp1300R and went through the rebuild last spring. Cost me around $1800 for the build (oem crank, Pro-X pistons, $300 Build labor, and I swapped out the motor). Personally from what I have read, I would not mess with a SBT motor or one off of ebay. My 2 cents.

Thanks for the reply Dave. I hues I better keep looking. I had no idea it would cost that much to do a rebuild....

Even with the motor completely trashed I'd pay $900 for it all day long being in good shape. Apparently someone else thought so too as the ad is gone already. Great Craigslist deals like this don't last long as the scavengers are always quick to pounce.

That about sums it up. And not to mention it may be hard to find a guy to build the motor for $300. Oh and cases usually are not replaced by half, do both sides from what I have heard.

$100 for gaskets? Where would that be?
