Ultra 300x Engine Oil (maintenance w/pics)

I just did my 4th oil change (just reached 50 hours).

According to Kawasaki I should only change my oil at 25 hours but I try to change it between 10-15 hours. I don't do any "racing" as such but do ride it like an Aussie!

My dealer changed from using Kawasaki Oil to Penrite based on what the Kawasaki Oil looked like after about 13'ish hours (it didn't look great). When I changed it at 8 hours, prior, Kawasaki oil looked ok. So it looks like between 8-13 hours it "goes bad".

Ok, due to a couple of recent rides, in quick succession, my oil just got changed, but this time at 17 hours (put about 5 hours on the ski in a couple of days).

This is what brand new Kawasaki Oil looks like (yummy golden colour):

This is what 17 hours of Penrite looks like:

I couldn't believe how BLACK it was! I should have changed it at 12 hours (before I went for the latest rides) but I really didn't think it would look like this at 17 hours. I can't imagine leaving it in there for another 8 hours!!

Note: I don't seem to be using that much oil and I don't have a fuel smell at all.

So I'm thinking of another oil brand now. Maybe Motul??

Does anyone have any experience with other oils and what they looked like after 10-15 hours?

It's 10 hour oil changes for me now, no excuses!!

    Cheers, Mal.

    That's interesting because I'm thinking this oil: Motul 7100 4T 10W40

Is that the one you've been using?

    Cheers, Mal.

This is my first 4 stroke so I'm going to a full marine synthetic oil (amsoil 10w-40) every 12-15 hrs.. besides oil level will check color and condition from time to time...takes longer for synthetic to break down and might not be neccessary to change as offen....

But after spending $300+ a yr on 2 stroke oil the cost is a non issue...

It may be a little excessive but my oil get changed every 5-7 hours max ..did the same with my 250 x and the machine has never had an issue with over 100 hours . Did that with all my toys and always had good luck . Just my 2 cents.

I can only speak for the 260, but I never went more than 15 hours between oil changes. I always used "recommended" oil types . . . and they all looked dirty at 15 hours to me. I just think that's the nature of the Ski. For a true recreational rider maybe 25 hours is ok . . . Seems to me though that we are all a little faster than just "pure recreational" here!!! JB

I use Kawi 4stroke full synthetic. Rec riding I change it 15-20 hrs. If in racing season and practicing for races then ever 10-12 hrs I won't really know how my oil holds up until I get my test back from my oil from the han and previous 20 hr old oil. Like most will agree motors normally won't fail due to type of oil. But more from lack of oil. And Mal Motul is good oil. They make the oil that goes in the Kawi bottle

Oil color doesn't mean much at all! When the oil actually breaks down and loses it's effectiveness, it becomes thick!!!
So if when you change the oil, the oil actually feels thicker than when new, is when you need to worry!

The oil color can change after 4-8 hour of ride time and when you have it in a bucket it will look black! Nothing to worry about IMO! It never hurts to change the oil often though if you don't care for the money which is insignificant!

One thing you certainly need to change with every oil change and more important than the oil itself is filter! All the miniscule metals are trapped there if any! Changing the filter is as important if not more important than the oil change alone!

Ride it like you stole bro! Great job!!
