How bad an idea is it to use a small torch (hand held, bout 5 inches tall, butane) to heat the bolts on the intake grate. it's been a while since i've used my soldering gun and it's dead now...

thats what i used. just make sure you have a crow bar to pry some and heat some..... be careful not to burn the hull tho.

My advice is DO NOT apply any heat. Many people overheat the bolts which causes the inserts to spin in the pump shoe.
Just give it slow steady pressure. If you feel the bolt tighten up just run it back in a couple of turns and try to back it off again.

oh...glad, im still putting the wedge and pump back together....i thought it was recommended before to heat the bolts on the stock grate to melt the lock-tite and remove the stocker....?

I don't recommend putting heat to it. Use heat as a last resort.

Keep the socket straight on the bolts.
Make small even movements.
Take your time.
