    Aussie MSX140 Build

Ok guys, I'm going to be doing a full rebuild on my newly acquired MSX140. I will document this build here, nothing really sexy about it looking at a stock build for a comfy family ski.

First things first, it is evident that this thing has been exclusively ridden in the salty stuff as the evidence will show.

I took the ski off the trailer and put her on my home made stand, it sits at a really nice height to work very practical.

    So for the bad news:

Cases are busted where the rod bent something crashed through the water jacket and cleaned it up good. No way I can use these cases now so these are high on the priority list.

PTO Cylinder is busted up bad. This one is off to the bin.

Interesting that the MAG piston is glowing black on the skirts. Never seen that before.

Everything is salty and surface rust is everywhere. The pump assembly is stuck good I will try to knock it out tomorrow and remove the engine.

    Heads and Injectors

The heads have a fair amount of surface rust, of most concern right on the injector mount. They are also showing signs of the rust working its way through the paint bubbling it all up. I didn't take pics of the domes, but they are ok the worst is the pto which has very minimal pitting. Get heads as well? I'm assuming the Virage txi and Genesis I use the same heads - if any can confirm would be good. A bit of surface rust around the injectors as well. I noticed that a little fuel was in the mag injector, the other 2 had nothing in them. Not sure if that is a bad sign or not.....

    Some good news!

It looks like I have the elusive yet highly desirable 2004 rev 2 ride plate 5631598.

As it turns out, my MSX must have been built after the October 20, 2003 cut off date when the new plates went into production (been reading Keith's research on this). My HIN J03 indicates an October 2003 build, though the emm is stamped Oct 24 so I made it by 4 days then. Happy with that.

Thinking of 4-Tec for this MSX? Like Beerdart's?

BTW, what's up with this one?

I don't have the skill to undertake a project of that scale. I still consider myself an apprentice this is my 5th build so hopefully I get it spot on without too many issues! The pro needs some body work and putting back together. The engine is built I expect to finish that build this year but I'm putting priority on the MSX as it will be a good winter ski I won't get as wet with it, maybe do a little fishing as well couldn't see myself doing that on the pro.

    Engine is out

I think this engine could be used for a documentary of how salt water corrodes parts - even stainless steel.

Corrosion is evident everywhere, as is the sandy stuff in the stator cooling plate. Looks like I will be salvaging very little from this thing, luckily I have sourced a lot of the parts from a trusted reliable source, will be arriving soon.

The driveshaft bearings are completely seized as well which is an unwelcome bonus.

Oil pump is rubbish that has gone straight to the bin.

Starter motor is seized in real good as well.

Stator plate bolts all snapped on removal - I believe this is a very common problem these bolts don't seem to cope with the tensile force.

Some good news though. The fact that I have a bent rod meant applying the necessary force to remove the flywheel was no problem. The stator and bendix look real good I will be ohming these out to check before they go back in.

I'm thinking maybe oil injection failure might be a possibility, that oil pump certainly don't look like a runner to me.

I have been looking. Don't know where I would put it as I'm staring to feel like a PWC hoarder. I'm sure I can make room though.

I'm sure there's room in your living room.

You know, they call them "couches" on PWCTurday for a reason...
