Sludge in Bottom Case during Rebuild

I tore down my '03 GTX 155 NA to do some reliability checks and upgrade a few parts (for the same reason). In the bottom of the engine cases there was a small amount of slimy sludge that felt like it had sand (or something mildly abrasive) in the goo. I have never seen this before and was curious if anyone else had?? This has been a mostly fresh water ski and has around 100 hours.

I have changed it every season like clockwork. We are not high hour people. We average 20 or so hours a season. Too many kids in high school sports.

I'm wondering at this point if I need to pull the oil pressure control valve?

If you haven't got an oil alarm,i think your good
Isn't the sludge, some crankcase sealant that was spilled ,they might have applied a bit to much of the stuff when building your engine.

I don't think so. It's like a thickened oil mixture that has some grit to it - it is not hard at all. The only reason I posted it here was to see if someone said, oh yea - I have seen that - change this seal (just for example). I am really just splitting the cases to change the chain - otherwise I would never have seen it. All oil screens are clean.

If you always change your oil of the beginning of each season the heavier particles don't stay suspended in the oil and make there way to the bottom over the winter. they will remain there and form a heavy sludge that wont mix well and is not easily sucked out. Thats why you should change your oil at the end of the season before you put it away and not at the beginning.

I have seen this many times with boats engines. Both Mercruiser and Volvo Penta maintenance manuals require you change the oil before winterizing. Its also another price you pay with having to suck the oil out of the top of the engine. You never really get it all...

That's what I normally do, but I did it more from a ph standpoint. That's good information to know.

Most of us tend to change the oil more than once a season, the only time I've seen sludge in a motor is on a ski that had they only changed the oil at the end of the season and wasn't used alot either during the year, just sayin.......
