    Installing Piston rings.

Lets make a sticky out of this for people wanting to know how to install piston rings on a Fugi-650-750-780 (blue), Fugi 700 (red),Fugi-785(red) and a Domestic-900,1050,1200(red)

Some questions that will surely pop up are:

How many rings on each type of motor

What type of ring for each land? beveled, l-ring, square, ete.

What markings show whether the ring is up or down.

Which direction does this marking go?-up or down

What to use to expand the ring onto the piston

Different techniques to squeeze the rings in the lands as you install a jug.

Checking ring gap in the bore first before installing the rings oto the pistons.

How do you get the ring square in the bore when checking the ring gap?

How many places do you check the ring in the bore?.

How to file a ring correctly to get it to spec

    Whats a cross hatch?-

Recommended manufactures to buy rings from?

What break in procedure to use to seal the rings

    Deglazing the cylinder

Should you hone it or send it out to be done?

Diamond hones (for Nicasil bores) verses metal sleeve hones.

Balls hones catching edges on ports of Nicasil cylinders?

    Locating pins? What are those?

Should you deglaze or hone your cylinder before installing new rings?

What to use to deglaze a cylinder.

Checking the lands for excessive wear or carbon build up or varnish.

    How to clean the lands.

Checking out of round or taper. does anyone actually do this? seriously you do? You have a bore gauge? Cmon... Maybe Beerdart has 1. lol

If your running synthetic usually, should you switch over to conventional oil so the rings seat? how long the change? 1 tank of gas?

Piston in correct orientation--marking on piston top pointing to ext or intake?.

If the motor is on the bench or still in the ski, which jug goes on first? whats the easiest way to go? pto cen, mag? cen,pto mag?

Fill in the blanks if you know or have done it.

Add other tips or info or ideas you have thru experience or tricks or techniques.

Is it ok to just install a new set, check nothing basically, and go ride? you'll find out soon enough! LOL

Kevin just saved a motor from 1 of the rings being upside down. way to go Kevin! Good thing he checked the rings again. SEE how important this stuff is! K-boomb!

    The 700 is not a Fuji. Its a 2 cylinder domestic. Basically 2/3 of a 1050.

Actually, what I was going to say was all the answers you seek are found in the repair manual and/or the instructions accompanied with the piston and ring kits.

Most of the answers to questions on this forum can be found in the manual or by referencing parts diagrams............

Bow, you could not cover all that you have asked in one thread, there would be so much stuff people would get confused and lost looking through it. Most of the things you mentioned are Good Points to consider when doing a rebuild. Alot are not needed.

For checking bore size and out of round, you can buy a telescoping bore gage and then use a mic to read the gage, The telescoping gages are relatively cheap. And yes I do own one. No one is going to invest in a diamond hone for Nicasil that I know of. Off all the Rings and Pistons I have done,I've never(repeat never) have ever needed anything but my hands to install them. And I am talking over a hundred.

Most everyone on here has a manual for there ski or engine. Best advise, If you have a question on your rebuild search or ask, most of the Vets on here will reply with the answer off the top of there heads from doing many motors.

If you follow the Polaris manual when doing a rebuild you should have no problems. Its very simple to read and understand and generally has good accompanying photos.

Actually, is that the case any more?

The last Wiseco I had seemed to be heavier than the other 2 I was trying to pair it with. I think they may have changed their design to combat the expansion issue they have a reputation for.

Hell, at their new price of $500 + for a new set, they'd better have it figured out.....
