info needed Cumberland & Tennessee river

Every year our group does a week long ride, typically focusing on rivers allowing for calm water conditions.

This year we are looking at the Cumberland & Tennessee Rivers, potentially starting in Celina TN and riding the Cumberland to Lake Kentucky and then joining the Tennessee River and riding to Knoxville TN.

We have begun plotting the trip and are looking for as 1st hand info as possible. We are not from this area so any info is appreciated.

Recommendations for cities to stay – hotels close to the water, good marina services and locations, restaurants on the water and any info you feel would be an aid in planning this trip.

    Thanks,
    Mike

These are the people you need to talk to, or join in with the ride. I know there are members on here that have been on this ride that I hope will chime in with more info.

Heres a link to a good map.....I have to get to work right now.....just look it over....Im pretty familiar from Cordell Hull to Cheatham Dam....Ill get it to more detail later on....I do know that you have to make an appointment to lock through Cordell Hull as it is closed to regular navigation....

that would be a great ride about 900-1000 miles (guessing), so how many miles do you want to do in a day?
like Harry said above the only lock you would have issues with it the first one coming down from Celina at Cordell Hull you will need to make a appointment plus you may be able to call the marina clost to the Dam for help "defeated creek" 615-774-3131.

there are several guys here that can tell you what you need to know we may join you on part of the ride just let us know when you planning on coming down

Thanks guys info is appreciated; many thanks for the Cordell Hull update

Have not finished plotting entire route, but appears to be over 1000 miles. Looking at potential dates and would appear early to mid August with the most likely time frame.

Any further info would be appreciated.

I may be in for meeting up below Cordell Hull and riding to Old hickory dam, Id say that leg is close to 130 miles....let us know what your schedule is around that part of the trip, may even head on down to Cheatham Dam after that......plenty of fuel stops and eats on that part of the trip.....from Old Hickory to Cheatam ,,,Downtown Nashville is shy of the middle of that leg of the trip pretty much....plenty of fuel stops there too............From Cordell Hull to Old Hickory Dam there is Shady Cove/Bledsoe Creek marina (about 5 miles off the channel), then Cherokee Restaurant / Marina .... Cedar Creek Marina/Restarant, Gallatin Marina/ Breakfast, not sure abour lunch or dinner, then on down you have Black Jack Cove/ Restatant, Creekwood Marina/ fuel only, Drakes Creek Marina/fuel only and right at Old Hickory Dam you have Anchor High Marina / Restarant......Then from Old Hickory to Cheatam Dam you have Rock Harbor.(if open) been closed since the flood of 2010....a little ways down you have Commodore Marina Resturant (new last year , havent been in there yet, then you got a fuel stop and great burgers in Ashland City (cant remeber the name of it, but if you pass the bridge you just passed it (its right on the river) thens its a little ways on to Cheatham dam right down the river @ 8 to 10 miles if I remember right....lock through then head to Clarksville.....been past that one time heading to Lake Barkley....not real familiar with the rest of the river from there on.....give us an idea when you get it a lil more finalized and we will see where you plan to spend the night and be able to find you some close hotels......

    Hi guys,

This is a our current rough plan.

Sunday August 19th - Celina to Nashville - 200 miles
Monday August 20th - Nashville to Clifton - 285 miles
Tuesday August 21st - Clifton to Guntersville -190
Wednesday August 22nd - Guntersville to Kingston - 190 miles
Thursday August 23rd - Kingston to Knoxville - 75 miles

In terms of Nashville, is there any marina's in the downtown core? Rock Harbor is a few miles West of town, anything closer? Not much in the way of Hotels close to Rock Harbour.

    Thanks for your help
    Mike

Rock harbor will be the closet marina via cab to downtown. That Nashville to Clifton ride may do you in. Lake Barkley and Kentucky lake are both big bodies of water and can get very rough. I would recommend not trying to ride them both together on the same day.

    Thanks Nash,

We are slightly handcuffed on our timeline so we do have to work around 1 larger day of riding. The thought is with only 1 lock and larger area's of water the oppurtunity to log high miles is achievable. We are certainly hoping for support from the weather man to accommodate a large 2nd day. We have ridden over 300 miles on several occasions, there will be a support truck following us and if we need to alter our plans due to weather. We normally ride on Lake Erie and our used to very large bodies of water, that being said calm water is our hope given a high mile day.

Would you have a suggestion for a lunch stop on day 1, Celina to Nashville?

    Thanks
    Mike
