is there oil in the cone on a 03 800r?

I was wondering if.there is oil or grease in the cone on a 800r... I was at launch over the weekend and over heard some dudes on skis talking bout maintenance. and one of them brought up cone maintenance but idk if gpr 800 ever came with anything in it...

I can't speak directly to the 800r but if those guys had SeaDoo's...those have synthetic oil in the cone and need to be changed out every 35 hrs of use or so from what I remember when I had mine. Stuff is stinky as hell. I was told that my yamaha SUV 1200 has no oil in the cone to maintain if that helps get you in the right direction? If you have an owner's manual or shop manual it should be in there under the recommended maintenance if it needs it.

you can clean the cone, but that grease never makes it to the bearings

yes, just waterproof or marine grease

I'd just crack the cone open and make sure no water got in there

The service manual calls for EPNOC grease, whatever that is...I was never able to find it. The grease from the factory is lighter weight, similar to lithium grease...not nearly as heavy duty as the blue Yamalube stuff. I use the old Fercho method of mixing grease with gear oil to make a thinner mix that will keep the bearings bathed instead of splattering to the sides. There's lots of opinions on what's best, but personally I mix Amsoil synthetic race grease with Amsoil synthetic marine gear oil.

so its like wheel bearing grease.... is this serviceable with out pump removal?

It's not like wheel bearing grease. The pump is spinning at 7000rpm if you use a cheap grease it will not last for very long. Just because the label says marine grease doesn't mean it's ok to use. You need a grease that is meant to be spun. If you read the can it will tell you whether or not it's designed for that type of use. Trust me been there done that lol.
