    Port or Starboard ?

    Starboard and Port
For memorizing the difference port and starboard and their corresponding lights, there is a surprisingly simple method. Which side of the boat is the starboard side? Well, let’s see, the word "starboard" is longer than the word "port". And the word "right" is longer than the word "left". So the starboard side of the boat must be the right-hand side of the boat. (if yer facing forward!)
But what of the lights? You guessed it; the word "green" is longer than the word "red". So the starboard or right side of the boat will carry the green light, all the words being longer than those on the port, or left side which carries the red light. The only problem with this method is that the beginning sailor will tend to assume that by this logic, the starboard side of the boat is actually longer than the port side. That’s fine. Simply explain that that is where all the weather-helm is coming from.

The actual origin of the term "port" is speculated to be because the left side of old merchant sailing ships had a loading or entry port. The right side had a steering board that hung over the side of the ship (before the invention of rudders) which is where the term starboard comes from. So if the steering board hung over the right side, the boat would need to dock on its left side, or put into port on its left side.

The reasoning is kind of like wiring the lights on a trailer. Green grass on the right side of the car, yellow stripe on the left side of the car, etc.

Another way to remember it port is a red wine and a red light is also on the port side. I know it's a bit strange but that's the way I was taught in basic helicopter school in the Marine Corps to recognize anti collision lights. Just sort of stuck with me for some reason. Hey what do you know? It worked.
