78 replaces 76. Both are great units. Just upgraded from 76CX to a 78SC.
Garmin makes great stuff.

According to Garmin.com, the 76 series has been discontinued, so I think it's safe to assume the 78 series is the successor. If I lost/broke my 76 today, I wouldn't hesitate to buy either a good condition used one, or stepping up to the 78. It's been a great hand-held for on the water and on the trail.
BTW, if you guys are looking to expand your riding area(s) or do some exploring, check out my website http://pwctrailfinder.com/ No signing up to do, no login/password needed and there is nothing to buy. It's just a platform for us rec. riders to share information.
The site is still new (it's been up about 6 weeks), but I'm adding states/trails data all the time. I'll be adding some Alabama /FL Panhandle info soon. Check it out and please consider sharing your information.

Excellent. They get brighter when hit by sunlight.

I am also looking into a GPS. Originally I was looking for something just for speed, but some of these units with the small charts look nice. Anyone know of any cheaper models that would work nicely for both speed and plotting? I don't want to break my bank (new ski, parts, go pro, etc already did that) again!!!!!

I have a Garmin 450T Oregon I'm going to use. It was expensive as it is really for hiking and such, but it will give me my top speed so no reason to buy another.
