Thread: Sunk my bike!

  1. #21
ya, breathing exhaust is bad news. found a hole in this thing ... resonator?? ... pulled one off another bike and replaced, tightened down EVERYTHING in exhaust system, seemed good. no more smoke in the hull while running on the hose. put it in water, heard a quite pop or more like a poof sound, which was a bummer, but ran it anyway. it was still getting smokey in there, but way less. running 95% + strong with the seat off, 7000rpm. but with seat on the problem is not as bad, but im still smoking up the hull a little and loosing power at times.

my question now is: how can i track down the leak, OR possible blockage. its got to be in there somewhere, i pulled a similar piece on the other side of the boat didnt find anything, then i tried to pull another piece that connect to the end of the line where exhaust exits the hull, its wedged all up inside the rail of the hull in there with the styrofoam, but i couldnt get it, the engine is pretty much in the way.

also, what is all the exhaust piping all about, cooling or noise of what??? think i can ditch it?Click image for larger version.

First I would bypass that resonator and never use it again. Next check all exhaust hoses for any holes or splits - track down where the smoke is coming from and Lastly- never run your ski out of the water for 30 mins like you said even on a hose. That is trouble, you will cook your pump bearings, carbon ring might also be shot by now.

ps- the secont pic is the waterbox- unclamp the strap and hoses and you can pull it out if needed

What a mess your raves are nasty as f*ck! When you had them off did you look in the holes and see what the pistons look like? Was this fresh or salt water? Clean those raves really good if they are sticking your RPMS are gonna be affected. Also check all your electrical boxes for any water in them, clean, wd-40 and dielectric grease the connections. Make sure water did not get into your oil tank and gas (not sure how high the water was in your hull). Your wear rings looks alright, no big chunks or gouges. Does water come out of the pisser on the back?

salt water, very salty. couldnt see pistons, but rave actually was pretty clean, oil was clean too. they arent sticking. yes water is circulating.

i think my exhaust leak is actually from the rave on the water box. those things seem pretty cheesy, what is up with the spring clamp thing holding them together, why isnt that screwed together or sealed better?? (fought it for like 30 min trying to put that thing back together) just seems weak imo. not sure if that one on the water box is the source, but after pulling everything starting at the water box and going all the way around to the last piece of the exhaust before it exists the boat, everything including hoses seem fine. the rave isnt closed tight. check the pic. what does that thing do, is it supposed to be sealed tight? how do i fix if so or just find another?

Ouch.....salt water well hope you did everything right or when you ride again it might go boom! Maybe not now but down the rode. Just open that cap (part not closed) that cap can be open and not cause a leak. Theres a rubber diaphram inside that might be torn by a metal clip. If theres a hole, itll leak and cause some rpm loss. You can replace the rubber.

So the plastic cover on this rave is basically pointless then?

No you need it to hold the spring, its like the raves on the motor but no paddle. Open it up, bet the rubber is ripped on the bottom.

ok, found the other leak. it was in the back of the other resonator (on the left side) that thing doesnt come out, the engine is in the way. soooo, i cut it in half with hacksaw and threw it away. i made my own hose to run straight from the good resonator on the right side (after waterbox) to the end where the exhaust comes out.

final questions if anyone cares to share opinion: im using radiator hose i picked up at Autozone, as well a a couple "L" shaped pieces of slightly softer rubber from the random hoses and pvc department at home depot.

im a little concerned about how that stuff is going to hold up. any one know what exhaust fumes might do to that stuff? and any suggestions about how to do this better / what to use??Click image for larger version.

You might want a larger diameter hose section. Looks like your adapters are bringing the size down pretty small. Look online for some reinforced silicon hoses and fittings- just a thought. The resonator is a pain to get out but can be done cutting it in small pieces or you can just leave it in.
