You dont necessarily need a dial indicator if you are just trying to find TDC, you can also do it with a dead stop. You can thread a stop into the spark plug hole, rotate engine until it contacts the stop, mark the flywheel, then rotate engine the opposite direction until it stops, mark the flywheel again. 1/2 way between the 2 marks is TDC.

well this is what I did...
I took a spark plug and removed the porcelain and modified it for a standard dial indicator... I don`t know the OD of the dial indicator stem yet, but the hole can be modified again... I could drill and tap for a set screw when I know the final hole size for the gauge...
it`s not perfect but should work...

edit: made another one for 3/8 OD stem, after I read that majority are .375

how did you remove the porcelain. I need to make "spark plug engine removal tools" per the manual but tried the "hammer method" to get he porcelain out but couldn't.

If you grind off the crimp at the top the porcelain should just fall out. Either that or use a die grinder with a cut off wheel to remove the crimp.

ok, the dial indicator gauge came in, and another revision was in order. The collet needed to be longer bc this is a 0-1" gauge...

I had found a small screw, drill and tap, but decided on the groove cut and a fuel injection style hose clamp...
I originally thought I was going to permanently fix the gauge to the adapter, but this way allows me to use the indicator for other things as well...

    here ya go!
