    97 gp1200 spark question

    so i got my carbs all clean and i go to start it and i was getting no where so i was thinking its prally the kill switch again but its not that so i checked for spark its so week would a new regulator fix this or should i ohm out the coils

    ohm out the coils and ohm out the stator windings as well. Stators go out on these more commonly then other things.

    I have posted on this several times in the past the biggest culprit for low or no spark is the lighting coil in the stator. these are known for failure on these motors. I always have a spare.

    is it a pain in the ass to change and where can i get one becasue there arent any on ebay

    easy to change, but first consult the service for the tset to see if for sure this is the issue. just look for stators or front covers I have seen them before. I had to buy one new once the thing was like $250 from Yamaha

    Just use a multimeter to test it first. Like bill said make sure it is the issue. You can measure it by opening the electric box. It is easy to change
    Open the electric box and disconnect the cable.
    Then open the fly wheel cover and change the stator
    Then you know the rest.

    am i looking for a specific reading or am i just looking for an open connection

    you are looking for a specific reading, and need the service manual which dictates what wires to test, and what range the reading should be in.

    BTW when you figure out if you need one or not I have a spare as I am parting out my SUV motor
