    reliablity of FX HO

going to look at an 05 FX HO
not running, just quit, owner selling as is
right up my alley because I fix everything myself anyway
boat has over 300 hrs so think it may have been a rental in past
    but moving on
whats the reliability of this year and model?
Im taking my compression gauge and a meter to see if its major or not.
any tips on what goes out the most?

I think most rentals are VX models.
If it was a rental then it was barely used.
Most enthusiasts put 100 hours a year on their skis, so 300 hours on a 2005 may not be that bad, all things considered. But 4 strokes can be expensive to repair so it depends on the shape of that engine and how it was maintained. Hopefully it's just something simple.
What are they asking for it...

Reliability is very good if the ski is properly maintained. All bets are off on a non-running engine. Good compression numbers should be close to 200 psi. Change the spark plugs as a first step to get it running, since they foul easily on this model. 300 hours is not bad if it was well maintained. Be careful not to overfill the oil...........very easy on this model, since you only get an accurate oil level reading when the engine is very HOT (it has a dry sump system).

    Good Luck!

so what fails the most on these?
I also found out that its been rebuilt previously so maybe it hasnt had that good of care.
I ve heard of 4 strokes going 2000+ hrs in a rental capacity so wonder why its broke twice in 300 hrs
then again it may not be the same thing happening twice.
    Will know more tomorrow

I had a fx with rebuilt motor, they tend to have stuck valves that will hit top of piston and some times put the rod through block,
the rebuilt motor failed after 20 hours, took it apart found crank bore was not straight , carefull with buying a rebuilt motor some are not of highest quality,
also these are very expensive motors to rebuild and the setting valves with shims is slow process, very little margin for error,

I'd walk away if it has a rebuilt motor.......just to risky to take a chance. I have heard of several 'rebuilt' motors that have not lasted long. As brianf says...little margin for error when rebuilding these.......needs someone who really knows what they are doing!

+1 Walk away. I have yet to hear a good result with a rebuilt motor on one of these skis.........basically an accident waiting to happen if it hasn't already.

motor now has 100 hrs on it
    SBT motor
no mechanical problems with motor that I can tell but has gremlins.
Surprise was I couldnt check compression because the plugs are smaller.
Wish I would have known before.
Im going back when I can find the right adapter for my compression gauge.

anyone know where I can get an adapter for my compression gauge without buying the whole set
my set doesnt have a small enough one

Its 10mm and a pretty common size. I've actually seen them at Walmart, but I'd say most auto-parts stores should have it.
