    xl 1200 rebuild

    Hey Guys:

I have a 2000 xl 1200; First ski, Bought it with low compression on the middle cly. I Been a dealership Tech for 20years and this is the first time a ever torn down a 2 stroke. Way cool design! Anyway
It looks like something let loose in the cly causing all the damge. I found this broken price of of metal down in the crank case and nothing else No shavings that I can see and the crank does not show any damage at this point; I will be taking down all the way FYI. Does anybody know were it came from; It looks like part of of a bearing case Click image for larger version.

I am not 100% sure but pop off the power valve covers and compare the bad cylinder with a good one. May be a part of that..

Thank you Water Woody for helping this Newbe! looks like a completed tear down for me; I thought I could get away with top end rebuild and run for the summer

    Water Woody:
Is it possible that this retainer clip came off and from the crank bearing and not damage the crank. I will be tearing it down this weekend; the reason I ask is when I brought it home I started the ski a couple of times and the motor ran nice and quite no rattling and no knocking. The two other piston are nice and clean with no signs of wear. History on the ski is none; other than the hours on the meter show 240 hr's. I am hoping that the crank is in good shape, but why would this retainer let go; is this a command problem? I will be taking pictures and documenting this entire rebuild to help others and to get help. Like I said never worked on a two stroke before. Master ASE Tech But the two Stroke is uncharted grounds; this should be fun.
