    Prop clanking on wear ring

I have a SL 900 with a prop that clanks on the wear ring when I run it out of the water. The pump runs fine in the water, but when I run the motor out of the water i can here clanking as I shut down the motor.
I have pulled the pump apart and the new bearings seem good with no end to end movement and the prop turns freely. The drive shaft seems to have no unusual wear. I paint the wear ring when I install them so I can see if there is any wear and the paint is worn off the first 2 inches of the ring. The wear is not deep, but it must be rubbing. The shaft slides into the splines without any resistance, so alignment should be good although the system does have 200 hours on it.
Any recommendations on what to do to stop this, or is this normal?

The extension ring may be out of round, causing the impeller to rub.

It is a used ring, but the wear is even around the whole diamiter. If out of round wouldn't the wear be on one side and not the other?

The only thing I am not sure of is that I seal the prop end of the shaft with RTV as well as the o-ring to keep water out of the splines. Maybe this could cause the shaft to spin out of round if the RTV drys thicker on one side of the shaft than the other, I don't know!
I have also noticed the bearing where the shaft goes through the hull always has water in it no matter how much grease I put in it. could this be causing it to intermittently seize causing the shaft to jump around. There is no unusual wear on the shaft in the seal area and there is always water proof grease still in the bearing.
There is also no signs of scraping on the edge of the prop blade's.

Do not use the RTV in the impeller splines. The drive shaft needs to be able to freely slide back and forth between the bumpers. Fill it up with waterproof grease instead. The noise you are hearing may just be normal jet pump rattle you hear on Polaris machines when running them out of the water. Make sure your seals are good inside the seal carrier.

    Thanks, that may be it.
Next question. Is there anything that can be run in the fuel to keep carbon deposit down?

    Stub shaft bent?

Any detectable side to side play of the impeller?

If the stub shaft end is slightly bent it would cause the nose end of the impeller to 'wobble' as it rotates.

Wouldn't I hear it when running in the water. The last one the bearings went out and I could hear the prop striking the wear ring, but I will try a different drive shaft and see if that quiets it down.
