(Need Help) 1996 Yamaha Wave Venture 1100

Hello all, first post, although not new to forums. First off, thank you for any help or advice you can offer.

Recently purchased a 1996 Yamaha Wave Venture 1100.
The seller explained there had been no issues to speak of.

    Symptoms:
-Had it in the lake yesterday, ran well for ~15min, then had trouble holding an idle.
-Would start, idle for ~10sec and die.
-Water in hull but no passive leaks in outer shell.
-Small amounts of exhaust escaping from lower area of cylinder.
-Looking through holes where spark plugs were, I see a LOT of black buildup on the piston faces.

I'm new to PWCs, for the most part, and have limited mechanical knowledge.

Here's what I have done so far:
1.Drained and refueled gas tank, along with adding SeaFoam.
    2.Replaced the fuel filter.
3.Cleaned up the air intake and upper region of carbs.
4.Cleaned and gaped the 3 spark plugs.
5.Removed gasket cover and noticed deteriorated head gasket, along with discoloration on the aft cylinder cover.

Going any further than this may be beyond my mechanical ability. I ordered a new head gasket.

    What do you guys think?

    Thank you!

Sounds like a bad head gasket, but your picture doesn't show that. There is another gasket underneath the head that is most likely your problem.

Yeah, I was worried about that. I've since removed the bolts holding on the cylinder head but I can't separate the cylinder head (#15) from the cylinder (#9). Is there a technique that I'm unfamiliar with?

Also, just to clarify, you're referring to gasket #18, and/or possibly gasket #12, right?

#18 is what I'm talking about. As long as all the bolts are removed you should be able to seperate the two using a flatblade screwdriver between the lifting tabs. Its probably just stuck on there.
