new job ... wish me luck!!

Well to make a long story short last Oct. I closed down my auto repair shop, because the owners would not renew my lease. Since then I have been a stay at home dad. I have also been applying to Norfolk & Southren Railroad since Oct. Well they called me a couple of days ago. So, I will be starting my new job on Feb. 5th.

What are you going to be doing on the RR? My old man started on Union Pacific RR years ago as a mechanic. He was mechanic for a few years, then moved to head mechanic, and now he is a gang supervisor. He superivises a tie gang. Lots of cool equipment with some impressive power!

LOTS of railroaders up here in Iowa!!

Out of all things I going to be a shipping clerk. The best part the pay is about the same vs mechanic, a lot eaiser work, better chances to move up. The majority of people (50%) in the local yard and offices are set to retire in the next 2-5 years.

Yup deregulation in the RR's was a great idea-you cant replace that many jobs in 10 yrs
Good for you but bad, very bad for everything that is shipped in the U.S. which in turn will drive shipping costs and time in transit through the roof
