    Broken head bolts sltx 1050

Hello everyone. newbe to forum. Have owned a 98 sltx 1050 for years and runs great.Let someone ride it and it come back with paint burnt off mag head and no power. 2 head bolts were broken under the cover and "o"ring burnt out.I assume the heat and pressure from the combustion displaced the water in the head and combustion temp burnt off the paint.Excessive carbon inside head cover and water outlet manifold.
My question is, I searched this and several cases but no answer. Is it chicken or the egg? Did the head bolts break and then blow the head or did the head blow and the overheating of that cylinder and expansion break the bolts? Thanks Tim

You need to take the heads off to peak at the pistons or at least compression test it.
Sounds to me your cooling was blocked and didn't sufficiently cool the Mag cylinder. Quite sure that piston is blown too.

Yes the piston is bad also but want to know what caused the head bolts to break. is it because it overheated or do the bolts break and of course then the head orings fail and the combustion would displace the water and overheat.

It's hard to say. Typically one may break head bolt when trying to remove it from rusted frozen hole, but seeing one breaks on its own is very rare. So it could be anything, could be that it was overtorqued when last put in and thermo expansion of aluminum head causes it to snap.
Back to your chicken or egg question, you just have to do your own forensic analysis on the bolts, check to see if its crack is old or new then you may find your answer.
