I keep going in strange places (Bayou,Tampa bay etc)Where I don't know my way around. So thought maybe a GPS would be a good idea or maybe just an APP for my I phone.
Any advise / experience, thanks.

Dart, if you're restricting yourself to riding mainly urban areas, you'll likely be fine w/a smart phone app (provided you can keep it dry). If you're going to start exploring, however, you may need to think GPS. Going that route, you'll want to find something that floats, is waterproof/resistant, handheld and is easily mountable to your bike. If you can find a deal, look for a Garmin 76Map 76Csx. Top of the line for it's time - but it's been retired. The successor is the 78, but they ain't cheap. Of course, there will be excellent rivals to the one I mentioned.

I'm in the same boat (no pun intended). I am now looking into buying a GPS but when I search I get so many hits and everyone recommends or uses something different. It would be nice to get some first hand advice.

I will say this, when I decided to go ahead and create the website (see link in sig. below) 90% of the initial trails were all logged on my 76. Of course, it's Garmin's MapSource that I "code" in... But the dang thing has been on prob. 10K miles of trail (water/land) and it keeps on ticking. I'm only sorry they up'ed it (and the price) to the 78.
