This is what Fercho and Hydrotoys and a bunch of other people have used for ever.

Drill and tap the cone 1/8 NPT at 1 0'clock position and use teflon tape on a recessed plug.

I use AMSOIL 75W-140 synthetic gear lube which has anti-rust inhibitors. ATF is to thin in my opinion. Replace and spray some WD-40 on the new o-ring everytime that you remove the cone and use a bit of 3bond 1211 on the face side of the pump after cleaning the mating surfaces with acetone and q-tips. Torque bolts to 8-9 pounds. Fill up with a turkey baster 3/4 up to allow the fluid to crculate. A flashlight to the side of the stock cone will allow you to see fluid the level in it.

I seen several Yamaha mechanics use marine grease in the pump. BIG MISTAKE. The marine grease is too thick and will not circulate leading to bearing failure. If you decide to use grease. Mix 50/50 Amsoil racing series grease with Amsoil synthetic gear lube. Add more or each until you reach your desired consistency.

Here is the information on the AMSOIL. If you would like pricing please call or e-mail me. Prices listed are Retail.

I actually like the Marine Gear Lube better also since it can withstand a 10% water intrusion.

Marine gear oils operate in environments subject to water contamination. It demonstrates the ability of AMSOIL Universal Synthetic Marine Gear Lube to maintain designed qualities such as extreme pressure/anti-wear performance and resistance to foaming, even when subjected to 10% water contamination.
AMSOIL Universal Synthetic Marine Gear Lube is not affected by water and provides 50% more extreme pressure protection for long gear and bearing life.
