Hi b&v, I have been searching this forum for awhile, to answer that same problem.
my service manual does not show a clear picture of the crank seals at all.
I just installed mine with the rubber out on the flywheel side.
I want to know if it matters which way they go in also.
The pto side I have the metal cups together filled with grease.
    thanks , joe

I just pulled mine off the crank on a 96 ZXi two days ago and marked them coming off. On the flywheel side the seal has the metal part facing out and spring visible on lip, the rubber side goes towards the crank..On the coupler side its metal cupped side rubber towards the crank on one half and the rubber side out and metal side in on the other flatter half----or metal to metal on the sides and rubber toward crank and coupler.Hope that helps

If you look on the parts diagrams it shows the flywheel side with the rubber feet sticking out towards the crank/case side also..

bummer, i put mine in backwards. I wonder if the crankcase will hold pressure.
Someone tell me I do not have to take the case apart.
    Thanks tfor the info.

I can not see why it won't work reversed, their is no oil in the crankcase,
if the flywheel rivits clear after I install the new flywheel bolt.

I don't want to split the case again, unless I have to.
I will pressure test the crankcase before install the flywheel
and thanks for the reply's also.

If the fuel/air mixture leaks out, you don't get the performance you could. However, if air leaks IN, that will make it run lean.
