is it possible that i might need to shim my intake grate down

I had my pump off my gp800 yesterday and I noticed when lookin through where the pump mounts up my riva intake grate actually sits a few mm higher so it basically doesn't line up perfectly with the hole.I could file it down to match the intake grate to the pump, but I'm not sure there is enough material there or it would be too thin so I think shimming might need to be done.if I'm going to be doin some filing would it also be a good idea to sharpen up the sides of the grate in the shoe area to blend them in more,I just don't wannd screw up this grate and cause problems but if it will make the ski perform better by makin the intake and pump perfectly matched up I will do it

Also I noticed there are huge empty spots inside the intake grate and there isn't really a plug kit for it especially considering its a riva intake would it be wise to maybe try to fill it all in with spray foam and carve it to fit after it dries
