Domestic 700 twin won't open up

I've checked the fuel selector, replaced fuel lines, cleaned out the carbs, cut back the plug wires, replaced plugs, checked the tank vent............ Once in a while it opens up and runs great but just for a little while. The rest of the time it runs at about 80%. If you pull the choke it bogs and dies. If you shut off the fuel it runs out of gas and dies. The carbs are at foctory specs and the machine is all stock, '96 SLT700. Starts up quick and idles perfectly, plugs have nice coloration. Anybody have any ideas?

Could a bad stator cause a limit in RPM's? And would that show up in the electrical tests?

It's possible. It's worth working the update kit in to the budget if you can swing it.

OK, new info. Just got done checking out the electrics. Original ignition system, never been updated. Everything checks out fine with the exception of:
    Black to purple---getting 1315
    Black to grey---getting 62
These are not far off from the specs I found but are they enough to cause it not to reach full RPM?

This one only has a fuel gauge with a broken needle.

Yes, the black to gray is lower than the spec of 10%. I had to replace my slh stator because the black to gray was about 25 ohms if I remember correctly. As a result, my ski would not make it over 2k rpm. Yours is not a far off as mine, so I would expect your rpm to be better than mine.

Can't guarantee this is your issue, but is likely to be it, or a least a large portion of it.

Once in a while this one will run fine when first started for maybe 5-10 minutes. The rest of the day it only turns maybe 4000-4500 rpm. I was suspecting the stator but was hoping for some solid info before telling my customer they have to spend $300.
