2000 yamaha GP800 wave runner top speed?

Took my ski out yesterday for the first time and could only get it to top out at around 38mph. While reading online I read the average speed for a stock gp800 is around 55-57, so I was far from the top speed.

Any idea what to look for as the cause of this?

Was that speed GPS or the dream-o-meter?

I would check the compression first and check to see if the power valves are working and properly adjusted

It was what the speedo was showing, and it seemed about right.

I will check compression today. I talked to a local mechanic said something about the tilt/trim on the handlebar. The tilt/trim is pretty stiff and I cant get it to change very much (while riding or sitting still).

I had the same problem and it was a power valve problem and the jet on my carbs were clogged.....

It has been sitting for about a year, I added new gas and it fired right up. Changed the plugs out yesterday as well. It starts right up and sounds crisp, doesnt really have any hesitation as if the carbs would need cleaned.

When you said fired right up was that in the water? If out of water mine would start and run no issues until i got in the water.

Not exactly sure on the RPMs i was turning, I didnt really check, I know the tach was pretty close to all the way though.

And it will start right up and run fine both in and out of the water. It sounds like it should, just doesnt seem to have the top end like it should.

The ski only has about 121 hours on it.
