skigolfnut, that picture is an eye opener, if the fuel pump casing is that rusty, imagine the armature and permanent magnet (they do not make them galvanized).
I can see the lifespan of a marine environment fuel pump being half that of a car fuel pump

i had one worse than that. the boat had sat for 2 years with ethanol fuel in it. completely varnished tank, fuel pump totally rusted, fuel filter disintegrated and the bottom of the fuel sending unit housing (which used to be made of plastic) was disintegrating into the gas. the newer fuel sending units replaced the bottom part with metal.

    ethanol is bad for skis

Yep, after I put on my ET-137 wheel I had a hard time with my AFR's at WOT- they were jumping all over the board, another member (MSRXP) said that it was my fuel pump, so when I pulled the old pump (it had 55 hours on it) it looked liked that,
Now with my Walbro pump everything is running great, I ended up getting the filters from Orielly's auto and changed them just to be safe,
PS there is a real good sticky on the changing the fuel pump too
