03 RX DI Big hole in piston

Anyone have a guess as to what caused this meltdown. It's just below the mag side rave valve.

Looks to me like fuel starvation, maybe dirty injectors?

Also, I plan to do rebuild the top end in place....any suggestion or secret tricks.

That's a first for me.. Seen alot with a melted dome on the exhaust port side - but usually a much larger burn pattern..

Never seen a hole below the rings like that though..

Yes I have seen this a few times before.
You have a leaking head or exhaust gasket (most likely head gasket) and your engine has become a steam engine.
This has happened over many hours of operation, the small leak when it hits the combustion chamber turns to steam and it melts the pistons.
I had one that had been doing this and it melted about 1/5 of the circumference of the piston.
both the rings where in place but just no piston crown.
Time to do a top end

I bet your pisser was spitting and not a constant steady stream

The rounded edges on the hole are a clue that moisture has been flowing down their.

TA for the input surfnturf I was worried my fuel injection had gone bad or something and it's great news to hear that it was a gasket. Top end kit is on the way, just in time for our Harsens Isl. vacation.

Just an update to this thread: I ordered a cylinder exchange kit from SBT due to time constraints (needed it back on the water fast for our Harsens Isl. vacation) and had it in my hands in 3 business days. It had everything I needed to get back on the water fast. The kids, their friends, my wife and I drove the crap out of it for 8 days and could not break it.
I say surfnturf was spot on with his advise. Thanks again
