96 slt 780 new engine installed but problems starting

Put in a new engine over the weekend, and it fired right up. I was working on the break in procedure but after the 30 min ride at 20% throttle it wouldnt start up. Just clicks. Sometimes it will decide to turn over and when it does it starts and runs fine but it wont start consisently. i opened up the black box and tried jumping the solenoid but that didnt do anything. Im not sure I understand the manul on how to test the solenoid, Could someone give me the dummy how to on "testing solenoid"?

Well the clicking is probably the solenoid...right?

Sounds to me like it might be the starter.

Based on the OP test, I would agree.

To test the solenoid, Take a meter and place the black probe on a ground and the red probe to the large terminal on the solenoid that has the starter wire attached. you should see 12v when the start button is pressed.

Are you sure you jumped the solenoid correctly?

Yeah i did that and it shows dead but when i hit start button it gets 12.5 volts so im guessing the starter is dead. Besides the two mounting bolts on the sides, is there anything else i need to do to replace it besides possibly removing the exhaust side....?

Yes, that will work! Just did the starter in my 96 SLT780 the other day. Remove the exhaust and slide it forward till it hits the tank. At that point is was just the two bolts to pull the starter.

There are a few on there for less than $50 free shipping.I bought one 6 weeks or so ago. It is a chinese copy of the original Japanese starter.
You can by a used one for $25 or so from a GreenHulk member.
Mine was so hot it would just about smoke and burn your hand. The $47.90 E-bay one works just fine. You should remove the starter and bench test it before you buy a new one. The starter gear should eat into a 2x4 without slowing down.
