    Raider won't start!

    1995 Yamaha RA700A WaveRaider Deluxe

    • 150 hours on the ski
    • Full tank with fresh fuel
    • Oil tank is full
    • Fully charged battery
    • New plugs with good spark
    • Compression is 150+ on both cylinders
    • New fuel lines and filter

On a cold start the ski will start and idle for 10-20 seconds and then die. When attempting to restart it just spins and occasionally starts, but then dies again.

Originally thought it was a carb issue so we swapped with a known working set (two sets actually) and had the same problem. (confirmed they worked by putting them back on the donor ski and rode without indecent all afternoon)

Didn't have a way to test the pulse line for proper vacuum, but I could feel some movement when it was disconnected while trying to start the engine.

    Any ideas?

can you confirm its a fuel problem by pouring a teaspoon or so of gas down each carb and see if it'll start/run ok for a few seconds?
I think that ski has a single, remote fuel pump that could be going bad.

Check fuel lines as well as the fuel filter. Alot of time the culprit is the filter. After years it builds up gunk and the ski will idle just fine until you hit the gas. Once it dies it is hard to get started for a while. if you let it sit for a while and it starts right back up again than more than likely it's that. I would recommend changing filter and possibly checking lines.

Yes, Check the filter still. Seen people put them on upside down and even backwards.

As previously stated, new filter and lines and still nothing. We even bypassed the fitler and pickup tubes and went straight from the tank to the inlet on the carbs.

The only thing we haven't checked yet are the reeds.

Pulled the reeds last night and they look flawless. Ugh... running out of ideas here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is it a lack of fuel causing it to not run? Maybe the fuel tank isn't venting. Try running it with the fuel cap off.
