Snapped off exhaust pipe into water box....wtf?

    hi guys,

My brother took his 09 SHO for a ride, when it was back on the trailer we heard a weird noise coming from the Rive waterbox.

so i took it off to find this? have you ever seen this before? is it supposed to be removed to fit the Riva waterbox or has it just snapped off?

The ski seems to have lost approx 2 to 4mph in top speed since we had the stock props clearanced (appprox 20 hours ago). Normally he beats my SHO but on the last ride a FX HO was right on his tail, anything to do with this?

    regards
    Adam

Look into the inlet of the waterbox. Is there evidence of that tube rubbing at all? Looks to have some heavy corrosion there. Saltwater?

doesnt really look like its been rubbing anywhere, one half of the pipe is a lighter colour (in that photo the bottom half) which looks like its been rubbing but may have been from when it was rolling around and hitting the inside of the waterbox outlet pipe.

I was quite surprised to see anything on the ski that corroded, it has about 170 hours on it, 99% in salt water but the engine bay and ski is spotless and we always wash/flush and inox after every ride.

Is it ok to use the ski without this pipe?

If you do, I suspect the OEM rubber coupler will fail fairly quickly since the broken pipe is designed to direct hot exhaust gas and water past the coupler. Sort of a pipe-in-a-pipe design.

Pipe (#20 in link below) is about $150, outlet coupler (#19) is $180.

My guess is that the Riva box was spun a few degrees, with the box inlet pressing against the OEM outlet pipe. The outlet pipe eventually failed. When I installed my Riva box I had to fit everything loosely and sort of shake the box to get it to position where everything lined up. Lots of glass cleaner on the coupler mating surfaces makes aligning everything much easier.
