Ticking Noise when First Started after Fresh Rebuild
Hey guys. Just finished rebuilding my 155hp (NA) GTX. This is my 3rd rebuild, so Im not a newbie - but .................
New timing chain, new tensioner assembly, new bearings in engine, professionally rebuilt head. No mods on this other than an aftermarket K&N air filter. So here is the issue:
The first time I ran it on the hose I noticed a strange noise from the head that went away in seconds. I thought, huh ? I've never heard the noise after a rebuild. Let it sit another week or so and was going to take it out today. Today the noise is like a ticking sound that again goes away in seconds (~5 secs) . Coming from the head area of the ski. I thought, huh ? Went and gassed it up and decided to run it on the hose for a couple minutes (much longest duration yet). So, this is 20 minutes later. Ticking noise for much shorter time (2 secs).
Obviously it is going away with oil or oil pressure. I wondering about the chain tensioner and chain slap. I'm inclined to pull the head cover and take a look before I run it any more. Other ideas?

Pull the valve cover, clamp the throttle, give it a spin and see if it is the tensioner.

I've heard it on a few 4 tec motors mostly after they have sat for a while.
