1997 GP1200 bounces off limiter. Prop issue?

I rebuilt the motor on my 97 GP1200 about 20 hours ago. Runs great but sometimes while toying around at slow speeds and then gunning it, she will bounce off the limiter for a couple seconds until it speeds up enough.

Does this indicate a worn ring or a the need for a reprop? If so...what is a good prop. It's a stock motor, 20 over, premix with amsoil. Everything else is untouched.

    Thanks,

    Jason

How foes the impeller look? Check the impeller clearance with a feeler gauge.

Do u want better top end? Overall? Or hole shot?

Yep, check impeller to wear ring clearance with a feeler gauge. .010 to .014" is the spec.
A great replacement prop for a stock to mostly stock GP1200 is the Solas XO. You'll get a better holeshot and top speed with that prop and a nice tight imp to ring clearance.

Ah! If .010 to .014 is the spec then I can guarantee it is larger than that. I think this winter I will re-ring it and toss on a prop. I like the holeshot of the factory prop so I couldn't imagine it being better...just needs to not bounce off the limiter!

    Thanks guys,

    Jason

I have a housing with plastic wear ring that is new in box. I also have two new skat trak impellers. One is for top speed and one would be better for hole shot. Let me know if you want anything. The Solas XO is recommended and is much better than stock IMO for an overall performance increase.

Are you sure its not cavitation, the intake/shoe on the older gp has some huge areas that can trap air,you can pull the intake and seal everything up real good,i would also look into an aftermarket intake grate especially if your pulling the prop it will be a lot easier to seal up the shoe area
