Question To run premix or not, that is the question, newbie here, please advise!!! yama 700

OK, well had the ski out last weekend running great, heard a small rattle, rough idle (should have known something was wrong) and now ski does not start. Thought maybe stator or pulsar was bad, checked compression after finding out oil line was off the pump (yamaha 700) and roasted the rear cylinder.

Have a spare motor and am putting that in.

Question is: RUN PREMIX AND BE SAFE OR KEEP OIL PUMP????!!!!

I am not sure what is better but since this issue, feeling that I really want to lean on the side of caution.

Please chime in on whats best... Dont ride every weekend but want them to run (have two same ski) when I wanna have fun..

THanks a lot guys and gals for your input\

I was lucky and caught mine befor running to long, just got a block off kit today in the mail, I run premix on all my outboards because of what happened to you, get rid of the pump and take it for peace of mind so it will not ever happen again.

Since my wife and kids sometimes take my ski out by themselves, I have decided to keep using the oil pump. This keeps them from accidentally messing things up and they are able to get gas from a marina if needed. From all my reading, yamaha oil pumps are reliable and most failures are caused by lines coming off. I kind of have a mental pre-ride checklist and this is one of the items I check before and after I'm finished for the day. Responses will vary, it's really going to be on you to determine your needs.

Don't blow a $2000 motor over a $100 oil pump. Get a block off plate, tie up your oil level gauge float and go pre-mix! Yamaha recommends 32:1

You hit a wake and loose a oil line and you will be wishing you went to pre-mix.

Guess that I will be running premix, any special oil that is recommended for this? I usually use the twc3 or whatever that oil is....can I use that or is there a better one out there. ALso, do teh carbs or anything else have to change to run it correctly?

Thanks for helping with all the questions

I use Penszoil synthetic, but I replaced my broke Cat, now I can run that.

I think premix route is a no brainer! I would find a decent oil and would recommend amsoil
