Just picked up a new to me 98 xl 1200

Just bought a 98 XL 1200 to add to my collection of skis. The last owner claimed he rebuilt the motor a couple years ago has only road it several times. I did a compression test all 3 cylinders are at 120psi and everything LOOKS ok. Question for you 1200 guys, my 99 XL 700 is very smooth and quiet and this ski seems a little nosie and ruff {in the water running} is this normal for a 1200? Top speed is around 53-54 mph and seems to have good power. Any tips or things to worry about with this engine? Thanks.

There are a couple of things you should do to the ski when u first get it. first thing i would do is remove cat. install D plate with temp. bypass sensor. then u want to install waveeaters on your power valves. Some people like to go premix on this skis which is personal preference. i personally kept it with the oil injection yamaha's oil pump is very reliable you just got to keep an eye out for loose hoses, specially cyl#3 which cost me a top end rebuild, as soon as you see oil in bilge stop ski and inspect all hoses. my top speed is 60MPH and im 250 pounds. i use 93 octane and yamahalube all the time.

No you don't have that stuff. You have the 65u non-power valve engine.

    Right, no cat on a 98' XL1200.

Idle should be about 1300 RPM in the water, which is about 2100 out of water. Otherwise it will appear to idle rough.
