What exactly happens when a supercharger goes on a Yamaha?

Like on an FZR or SHO? I've read a few posts where people have said they are selling their FZRs because their clutch went 4-5 times in ~60-70 hours. And several posts about Yamaha releasing the Gen 1-3 clutches with the Riva gear dampeners and all trying to fix it.

If you are out on the water and the SC goes, can you drive the ski back to the ramp?

Or does it have to be towed to keep broken pieces from potentially damaging the engine?

Consequences, internal damage, can you limp home, at what speed?

Are there error codes or other indicators that it is about to go?

What happens when the clutch goes?

What happens when the gear goes?

How much does it cost to repair?

When repairing what are the considerations?

Use a aftermarket clutch, Riva dampener, different better gear?

How much is the repair if not doing it yourself and not under warranty?

From what I understand if the Supercharger goes it usually shreds the teeth off of the gear, which fall down into into your oil pan and then the entire engine must be removed to clean all the debris out of the oil pan.

This is a great question. I did a search on other forums and the only answer I could find was on PWCToday but the thread would not load.

When my sprag stopped working in my 09 clutch, it just free-wheeled and built no boost. I just replaced the clutch and went on my merry way. If the sprag truly lets go and the locking cage breaks, its all contained anyway. Now if the gear looses teeth... Well.....

+1. Exact same experience I had.

Guys, you've got to use the search function. I searched this section of the forum (so as to only pull-up applicable threads) using one word in the search box--clutch--and page after page came up of threads with this same question.

Reading these threads will take some time but will explain that the early clutches had a weak link being the sprag itself. When these let go (normally) the only thing that happened is the shaft did not turn the wheel and no boost was made because the clutch did not lock-up. Not good but only required a new sprag unit at around $500 including the gaskets + labor. Then the gen 2 clutch came out and the clutch was strengthened so much that the teeth became the weak link and when they went the debris had to be removed from inside the engine.

Here's a pic of my sprag when it stopped engaging:

The teeth on the inside of the sprag (top pic) locks-up on the outside of the part in the lower pic that has wear. Whenever you get on the throttle the clutch locks up. The harder and more often this happens, the shorter the clutch will last...

At Craig...I did a search and didn't think to put in "clutch". That is helpful. I still don't know what I'm not doing that makes my clutch last so long. I don't have the waves here that the guys on the east coast of Florida do but I ride hard. I often get unhooked off of waves and certainly that is what is making the boost go through the roof for too long a period. now...starter has HEAVILY modified his machine so it doesn't surprise me his clutch went boom. But I hear of stock SC going bad with less than 100 all the time.
