Anyone here ever Box?
Since 9th grade I have wanted to box a little. Nothing competitive just a boxing club or something of the sort.Recently one opened up locally and I am considering going down and checking it out. I'm not overly quick, and at 194 pounds I would want to lose some weight to drop a weight class. Anyone ever amatur box for fun or competitively? How did you like it?

I did it for a while.... I used to go to "Legion halls" up here and box in front of the veterans....
It got boring quick though....
I would suggest some sort of mixed martial arts training.... Or if you had to chose one try Jujitsu... 99% of all fights end up on the ground...And Jujitsu is a very well rounded art...
If I had to do it all over again though the boxing does come in handy...
As I said try not to stick to one disiplen...

you really need to be in good shape, I can tell you that. When we used to box at the park district, I was amazed how winded I would get and how fast. Nothing like gasping for air with your muscles aching, and then catching a hook to the side of your head. GREAT FUN!

Yeah See that sounds fun to me. I did sparring and had one semi-real match and it was awesome ( a few years ago )
Im much stronger and in much better shape now than i was then, so im interested again.

If you're looking to do it to lose weight, I can tell you that boxing is the best cardio exercise I've ever done. I have a heavy bag in my garage and love it. Make sure you get the kind that fills up with water. The old fashion kind that's full of rags will get rock hard after the stuffing settles.

mike, i personally would go with a martial art. jeet kun do, brazilian jui-jitsu, kenpo, pachua chan, hopkido cane fighting!!!!
you will get some serious skills and a hell of a cardio workout. unless you are just looking to beat someone's a$$. thats what i like to do. inflict pain on other people.
lets just wait til beachbug and start a fight at seacrets

Do some MMA training and try out Ultimate Fighting . It is going to replace the boxing era. And now they have so many rules in it your not going to be beat half to death. It not like it was when it first started . Alot of bars hold MMA fight for amautuers in a regular boxing ring . Yo have more option with this
