    Navigation for Ocean? (Bimini run)

    For those of you who have made the Miami - Bimini ride (or something similar)... what navigational devices are you using?

    Would something like the Garmin eTrex 30 be good for this? (Obviously there would be multiple devices in the convoy for safety and redundancy)

    I am still in the "dreaming" phase of doing a run like that, but I'm trying to do some preliminary research.... thanks!

    Haven't done the bimini run but on my trips where there is no land in sight, I use a garmin 76csx.

    I think the one I have is the Garmin 276C with the Blue Charts;
    very nice little chart plotter and I'm sure they have a newer model now.

    If you have the GPS mounted on the ski, I'd take an extra attached to your vest just in case. The second one doesn't need to be a chart plotter, but is nice to have as a backup if you get separated from the ski & need to transmit a lat/long. An EPIRB & VHF, also attached to your vest, are a good idea as well.

    I had it mounted to the hull just forward of the handlebars, so I could see it while riding, even when standing. Problem was that the hull bouncing made it impossible to read any detail. I had to stop every time I wanted to actually read anything, and even changing views and settings was tricky without stopping.

    Personally I intend to install a GPS with a much larger display. Have not yet figured out which model.

    The Garmin handheld units, such as the one you listed, do tend to be well made, reliable and work well.

    Riding one handed while trying to use a handheld GPS with the left hand is tricky, so think about where and how you are going to mount the GPS.

Garmin make a great product. I use a garmin 62s. Very handy to have on the ski.
